Heat pump water heaters: the 2026 efficiency picture
A 4.0 UEF unit uses roughly a third of the electricity of a conventional resistance tank. It also needs 700 cubic feet of air, a drain, and somewhere you will not hear it.

The clearest efficiency win available in a house, provided you have an unconditioned basement or garage to put it in. In a closet inside the living space, the noise and the cooling effect turn it into a compromise.

Questions readers ask
Will it make my basement cold?
Yes, measurably. It removes heat from the surrounding air, which is a benefit in a humid basement in summer and a nuisance in winter if that basement is conditioned.
Do I need a new circuit?
Most units run on the same 240V circuit as the resistance heater they replace. Confirm the breaker size, because some models require 30A where the old tank used 20A.
How long do they last?
Ten to fifteen years, similar to a conventional tank, but with a compressor that can fail before the tank does. Check whether the warranty covers the compressor separately from the tank.
